Hard starting when cold Scenic 1 (Not TDC sensor)

Hi All
It's been a while since my last post, quess I shouldn't complain, because that means the Renault has been giving me good service and no dramas.....until recently.

I have done a search, but still can't find anything.

1998 scenic series 1, 1.6L, 8 valve, K7M engine.
Month ago the car blew a head gasket after some 260 000km, due to a water leak and I susspect being run low on coolant. (girlfriends grocery getter)
Before having the head done, she said, the temp gauge would periodically go above half towards three quarter, and just when she was about to pull off, it would suddenly drop down to below half again.
Anyway, took the car in, and had the head done and the gasket replaced, all was good, or so it seemed, when I got the car back, it now really struggles to start on the first start of the day, or when it is cold, you need to repeatedly crank it, eventually it will start after three or four minutes, then run very rough and misfire until it starts to get some heat into it. Sometimes with a strong fuel smell, like a rich start.
Once it has started, even run for just a few minutes, it will start right up at the first touch of the key all day long, until the motor is cold again, and it runs great otherwise.

I have removed and cleaned the TDC sensor, with sandpaper, the contact is nice and shiny and clean, the plug contacts are good, still no joy, same dramas.

Another popular fault according to my search is the temp sensor at the thermostat housing going bad.
I don't mind replacing it if it is no good, but I don't want to replace it only to find out that is not the problem, and the good folk here say; "you twit, we could have told you there is a twist in the chrome double overhead combungulator"
Thing is, the car started fine before the head was done, even with the blown gasket, only when it came back, did the trouble start.
It has been back to the garage a few times, and he fiddles, but never resolves the problem, he is stumped, I see he has put new clamps on all the pipes to secure any air leaks.

There are two temp sensors at the thermostat housing, a brown one and a white one, which one is the guilty party if it is indeed the case?
Any help, please guys, the girlfriend uses the car and carts my 6 year old to school and back, so I need it to be reliable.
